Car Insurance Question  We will be having a friend move in with us for an undetermined amount of time and he does not own a vehicle but will be needing to drive ours, how would we insure him to drive a car owned by us?

Insurance companies' rules regarding how to insure a person staying in your household differ however most will require you to add your friend to your policy as an additional driver. Most insurance providers require that all licensed household members (whether relatives, friends, roommates, etc) be listed on your policy so that coverage is properly extended to them.

Speak to your insurance agent to find out what your specific carrier requires you to do so that your friend that will be living with you can drive your vehicles and be insured to do so under your policy. Likely it will be adding the friend as driver to your policy though your insurer may say that he is already covered under your current policy terms.

Your friend would not normally be able to get a policy of his own to cover your vehicles since he does not have insurable interest in the cars. He may be able to get a non-owner's policy however this would only be secondary to your primary liability coverages.
