Car Insurance Question  We own homes in both Florida and Indiana. Our primary residence at present is Florida. All vehicles are registered and INSURED in Florida. We would like to know if we can KEEP FLORIDA TAGS AND REGISTRATION and insure the vehicles in Indiana? Thank You

If you have Florida registration and license plates then you will also need to keep FL auto insurance on your vehicles and not change over to insurance from Indiana.

Florida mandates minimum car insurance of $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 of property damage liability (PD) if you own a motor vehicle. Florida law requires you to carry the insurance continuously throughout the licensing and registration period of the vehicle.

This means any vehicle having a valid Florida registration and license tag must be covered by at least minimum insurance coverage for the entire period of the vehicle's registration. If you do not have Florida auto insurance on a vehicle you will need to surrender your license plate and registration at a FL Driver License or tag office. By doing this you will be able to cancel your FL insurance policy without penalties, such losing your driving privilege. So if you wanted to get Indiana insurance on your vehicles you would need to register them up there.

Florida insurance is required to meet the requirements of Florida Statutes. Florida insurance means that the policy has been issued in Florida by an insurance company licensed by the Florida Department of Insurance to do business in FL. Only insurance issued or countersigned by a Florida agent is electronically reported to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) for verification purposes.

Keep in mind according to Florida statutes any person who has a vehicle in Florida for more than 90 days during a 365 day period (the days do not need to be consecutive) must purchase personal injury protection and property damage liability insurance coverage, so if you did change over to IN insurance you would need to have coverages of at least the FL minimum requirements to keep the cars in FL over 90 days.

If the vehicles are kept in Florida most of the time then it likely would want to keep your FL registration, tags and insurance on them. You cannot change over to Indiana car insurance while keeping FL plates and registration on the autos since FL laws require insurance from a FL authorized insurance agent that can electronically transmit your policy information to the HSMV.
