I hold a NYS license and registration. I commute a lot in NJ and have got some speeding tickets there in the past 2 years. I know NYS doesn't take out of state tickets and nothing has shown on my record. Now I'm thinking of moving to NJ and I can't find out whether these past tickets will show up on my NJ record if I get a NJ license.

According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission if you move to New Jersey, you must transfer your out-of-state license within 60 days of your move or before your current license expires, whichever occurs first.

To transfer your out-of-state license to a NJ driver's license you must:

  1. Visit any MVC Agency with your current driver license (Basic Auto / Motorcycle) and the proper legal documents to pass 6 Point ID and Address Verification.
  2. A vision test is required. The knowledge and road test are waived as long as you have a valid, non-provisional driver license issued by any of the 50 states or District of Columbia.
  3. Once you pass the vision test (if needed) you will be issued a four-year basic New Jersey license and will be required to surrender your out-of-state license.

We contacted the NJ MVC to see if you moved to New Jersey and exchanged your New York state license for a NJ driver's license if the previous NJ offenses would be placed on your new NJ record. The representative for the MVC stated that yes, these previous offenses would be on your NJ driving record and points would also be assessed for them. She referred to your previous NJ speeding tickets as "points violation" meaning that they are moving violations to which points are applied to.

To get more information on how to get a New Jersey driver's license and more about a NJ driving record that you would have in place already with violations on it, contact the New Jersey MVC directly at 888-486-3339.
