Teens refer to the provisional license in New Jersey as the Cinderella license due to the fact that one of the restrictions is that you cannot drive after midnight. So as with the character Cinderella from the Disney movie, who needed to be home from the ball before midnight, so must a provisional driver or they will face penalties. Their car will not turn into a pumpkin but they could be fined and have upset parents.
In NJ to get a provisional license (the middle step of the GDL process in this state) you must by 17 years of age and then can practice unsupervised for 1 year before trying for you full basic driver's license. You must observe the following requirements and restrictions while driving with a provisional license:
- No driving between 12:01 a.m. and 5 a.m. Though there are GDL exemptions for exceptions due to employment or religious reasons.
- Passengers must be from your household. Only one additional person from outside your household is allowed in the vehicle
- You cannot use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hand held electronic device
- Seat belts must be worn at all times
There are others that refer to a Cinderella license as a conditional or restricted license that one gets if their full driver's license has been suspended. New Jersey has no "Cinderella" license allowing you to drive to work during a period of license suspension.
New Jersey does not issue any type of work license / hardship license / Cinderella / limited license thus far. For more information on the licensing process and types of driver's license that New Jersey issues contact the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.
