I have an Alabama learners permit. My family is military and we are living in New Jersey. Will I still be allowed to drive?

You will need to contact the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) about how to trade in your Alabama learner's permit and start on the graduated drivers license (GDL) that NJ has in place for first time drivers.

Your license cannot be transferred to a New Jersey license if you are under 18 years old. Instead, you must complete the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program requirements.

If you are under 21 years old or have never had a driver license, New Jersey requires that you complete a period of supervised driving before getting a basic driver license. MVC's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program introduces driving privileges in phases.

Depending upon your age you can go through the early bird process, young adult or adult process for the GDL. You will need to see under which GDL option path you fall under and get started with it in New Jersey since if you are now living there they will consider you a resident that needs to change over your AL permit for a NJ permit.

With a New Jersey student learner’s permit one must observe the following restrictions during the supervised driving period (minimum of 6 months):

  • No driving between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • You must be accompanied by an Adult Supervising Driver (at least 21 years old and licensed to drive for at least 3 years) in the front seat.
  • Passengers must be from your household. Only one additional person from outside your household is allowed.
  • You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hand held electronic device
  • Seat belts must be worn at all times.
  • See GDL Exemptions for hours-related exemptions for employment or religious reasons.

To find if you can continue to drive with your Alabama learner's permit until you can obtain a NJ permit contact the New Jersey MVC directly. If you are able to still use this out of state permit until you get a NJ permit then likely you will have to follow the restrictions above however you will need to again check with the MVC to make sure you are driving within the laws of New Jersey.
