In New York State if you obtain a Class B driver's license (a type of commercial driver's license or CDL) you can only drive commercially within New York State, until you are 21. However, you may not transport hazardous materials or drive a school bus. At age 21, these restrictions no longer apply. You must be at least 18 years of age in order to obtain a Class B or Class C CDL in NYS.
With a Class B license the vehicle type you can drive is single meaning something such as heavy single unit truck.
The vehicle description that a Class B CDL holder can operate is - GVWR of more than 26,000 lbs. (Class B may tow vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or less, may tow a vehicle of more than 10,000 lbs. providing the GCWR is not more than 26,000 lbs.).
Just merely obtaining a commercial driver's license, such as the Class B, should not on its own mean that your personal auto insurance rates will go up. If you need to upgrade your auto insurance to a business or commercial auto insurance policy then your rates would rise since this type of policy would normally cost more due to what it covers and its limits.
With a CDL, insurance companies are aware that you should have professional training and are held to stricter regulations regarding your driving record so rates on your personal auto insurance should not be affected however there may be some insurers that say you will now drive more miles during the year and thus you are more at risk to be in an accident and thus your premiums will go up.
Insurance companies' rating systems do differ so if your rates do go up with your current insurer try shopping around for lower rates.
