You need a Class C license to drive a moped and the minimum age to get a Class C driver's license in Pennsylvania is sixteen (16) years of age.
A Class C driver’s license in PA will be issued to persons 16 years of age or older, who have demonstrated their qualifications to operate any vehicles, except those requiring a Class M qualification, and who do not meet the definitions of Class A or Class B. The holder of a Class C driver’s license is also authorized to drive a moped, a motorized pedal cycle (a motor-driven cycle) or a three-wheeled motorcycle equipped with an enclosed cab, but not a motorcycle.
The definition of a moped according to PennDOT is a motor-driven cycle equipped with operable pedals, a motor rated no more than 1.5 brake horsepower, a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cubic centimeters, an automatic transmission, and a maximum design speed of no more than 25 miles per hour, or an electric motor-driven cycle equipped with operable pedals and powered by an electric battery.
Criteria for a moped are:
- Engine may not exceed 50 cubic centimeters.
- Engine may not exceed 1.5 brake horsepower rating.
- Operable pedals required.
- Automatic transmission required.
- Design speed may not be more than 25 miles per hour.
- Does not require inspection.
- Moped plate issued.
- Annual registration fee is $9.00.
- No helmet or eye protection required for driver.
- Class C required on Driver’s License.
No helmet or eye protection is required while operating a moped. A Class M license is not required to operate a moped; you may do so with a Class C license as we mentioned earlier.
A Class M driver’s license will be issued to those persons 16 years of age or older who have demonstrated their ability to operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle. If a person is qualified to operate only a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle, he/she will be issued a Class M driver’s license. If your motorcycle is less than 50 CCs, an “8” restriction will appear on your driver’s license. This restriction prohibits you from operating a motorcycle 50 CCs or larger.
