My insurance cancels in two weeks however, had an accident last night. Will my insurance still cover the claim even though we are due to cancel with them in 2 weeks?

Just so you are aware of the difference between a non-renewal and cancellation of your car insurance policy, a nonrenewal occurs when an insurer decides not to renew your insurance coverages at the end of the policy's term. A cancellation occurs when an insurer decides to stop your coverage before the policy term ends or during the effective period of the policy.

As for your situation, as long as your auto insurance policy was in place at the time of the accident, meaning there is no lapse and that it was paid up and in effect, then the incident should be covered by your car insurance coverages.

If you are due to cancel with your insurer due to already obtaining another insurance policy with a different carrier then having claims made for this accident would not normally be an issue. If you are being canceled due to other reasons then you still should be able to make claims however it could be more of a difficult situation.

Since your policy with your current insurance provider is going to cancel in 2 weeks it may be helpful if the claims are placed now when your policy is still in effect. Once your policy cancels, claims for the accident that occurred during the term of your policy should still be accepted but may have more "red tape" attached to it if someone in the claims process has to investigate whether your policy was in effect at the time of the incident.

If the claims are still being processed at the time of your cancellation then they would seemingly be easier to go through then if they are started after the cancellation date and you have to prove the accident took place while before the cancellation and thus when the policy was in effect.

It appears you are in Maryland so if you have any difficulty with your insurance claims related to this accident you can contact the Maryland Insurance Administration, the insurance regulator for MD.
