Car Insurance Question  Are insurance companies in the state of Maryland able to view and use as a factor in quotes/premiums: (a) red light camera tickets (b) speed camera tickets if they are recorded on one's Maryland driving record?

An insurance company will be able to see the conviction for both the (a) red light camera ticket and the (b) speed camera ticket if they are on your Maryland motor vehicle record (MVR) however they should not use either as a factor in determining your rate quote or your car insurance premiums.

Maryland does have red light cameras that allow for photos to be taken of those entering an intersection after the light has turned red and thus sends them a citation. However, according to the Maryland District Courts site, payment of the penalty for this type of violation does not result in MD points being assessed to your driving record and cannot be used to increase your insurance rates. It is basically handled as a parking ticket.

A ticket for a red light camera should state on it: "Payment of the penalty amount for the violation will not result in points and cannot be used to increase your insurance rates."

The same is true of a speed camera citation, no license points will be assigned against the vehicle owner’s driving record and insurance companies will not be notified nor can they consider the ticket in calculating insurance rates. Citations can be contested in Maryland District Court for either a red light ticket or a speed camera citation.

Other moving violations listed on your driving record though can be taken into account by auto insurance companies when calculating your premium rate. As the Maryland Insurance Administration notes on their site typical auto insurance rating factors include:

  • Vehicle type factors - make, model & body style, number of vehicles to insure, etc.
  • Use of vehicle factors - distance driven annual, commuting distance, business or personal use, etc.
  • Location (Territorial) factors - location where the car is kept, street or garage parking, etc.
  • Driving history - accidents, moving violations, personal claims history, etc.
  • Prior insurance - currently insured, number of years insured, etc.
  • Personal history - occupation, gender, marital status, credit history, etc.
