Car Insurance Question  I have recently moved to Maine and just registered and insured my vehicle here. Is it necessary I also trade in my NY License for a Maine license?

Yes, you will need to obtain a Maine driver's license if you have moved to ME and are now a resident of this state.

Maine Revised Statutes noted in section 1501 that within 30 days of becoming a resident of this State, a person shall apply to obtain a license. A person who fails to comply with the requirement of this subsection of ME law and operates a vehicle on a public way or parking area commits: a traffic infraction if the person has been a resident for less than 90 days or a Class E crime if the person has been a resident for 90 days.

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) states that anyone seeking to acquire a new Maine driver license or new Maine non-driver identification card, or seeking to renew an existing license or ID card, will need to provide documentary evidence of Maine residency. Any resident seeking to acquire or renew a Maine driver license or Maine non-driver identification card will need to provide documentary evidence of Maine residency. This documentary evidence must contain an actual physical address.

If you are moving to this state and have in your possession a valid out-of-state driver's license, you can obtain a Maine license by:

  1. Visiting the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles office nearest you.
  2. Completing a vision screening. You may not be required to take a written and road test.
  3.  Turning in your out-of-state license.
  4. Paying the exam and license fees (these fees differ by class).

Detailed information on laws, exams and licenses is available in booklet for at the ME BMV. You can contact the Maine BMV to find out more information on how to change over your New York Driver's license over to a Maine license.
