If I get a speeding ticket in Maryland while driving a personal car do the points transfer to Delaware? Is there any discipline that will come from this?

Both Maryland and your home state of Delaware take part in the Drivers License Compact (DLC). The DLC requires member states to exchange information regarding traffic violation convictions. So Delaware will be notified of this speeding citation by the MD courts once you are convicted of the offense.

The DE Division of Motor Vehicles states that they include on your DE driving record all convictions, even those committed in other states. Since they do not note if points are assigned for these out of state offenses we contacted the Delaware DMV which stated that yes the DMV does assign points.

Once the DE DMV receives in out of state ticket information they place the out of state violation on your record and assign it points. So points are not transferred from Maryland to Delaware but DE assigns their own points to this out of state offense. Speeding violations in DE are assessed between 1 and 5 points depending upon how many MPH he was cited for going.

Likely there will only be fine in Maryland for you to pay for this speeding ticket. For other penalties that may come from this, as we mentioned it will be placed on your DE driving record and thus your insurance company may see it the next time they pull your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). It will depend upon your personal car insurance carrier's rating plan if this speeding ticket will raise your rates. If you have a CDL then this speeding ticket may affect you in other ways however you would need to discuss these penalties with your employer and/or DE DMV.

car insurance commentsI have been a cop for 15 years. Everybody asks me for help on tickets. The average citizen does not know the right info to get out of one. While there is no sure fire way to get out of a ticket whatever the violation is, there are legal gliches that can put the odds in your favor.
