Can I drive in West Virginia with my Virginia learners permit?

From the information we have gathered from the VA Department of Motor Vehicles if you are a Virginia resident with a learner's permit you are allowed to drive out of state as long as you follow the restrictions and conditions of your permit including having a licensed driver of the correct age in the front seat with you.

According to the VA DMV you may get your learner's permit when you reach 15 years and 6 months of age. It allows you to operate a motor vehicle when a licensed driver at least 21 years of age is seated beside you. The driver accompanying you may be 18 years of age if he or she is your legal guardian, brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, step-brother or step-sister. The driver accompanying you must hold a valid driver's license, be alert and able to assist you and be legally permitted to drive.

The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles states that they will honor any driver’s license or learner’s permit for operation in their state. The learner’s permit or driver’s license must be valid and must adhere to all restrictions mandated by the issuing state.

So if you have a permit from Virginia you may drive in WV and should have no problems as long as you comply with all of the rules and regulations of your VA permit.

State laws differ so if you want to drive in other states besides WV while you have only a learner's permit from Virginia you should contact other states in which you plan to drive in to find out if they have other restrictions and conditions you will need to follow and if you are legal to drive in that state with a permit.

In some states it may not be legal for you to drive with only a permit or unless you are 16 years of age, etc so you will need to check with the DMVs of the states you want to learn your driving skills in by operating a vehicle.

You should also check with your auto insurance provider to make sure you are covered if you drive out of state with your learner's permit. To get affordable auto insurance quotes for Virginia, click here.
