I got a speeding ticket in Florida will it count against me if I have a license in Tennessee?

Florida is a part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) while your home state of Tennessee in 1997 dropped out of this Compact, which requires member states to report back to the licensing state of motorist convictions of moving violations. However even without TN being part of this reciprocal agreement anymore they still have kept agreements with other states so that they report tickets back to other states and other states will report moving violation citations of TN drivers back to Tennessee.

When Florida informs the Tennessee Department of Safety about the speeding offense, if you are convicted of it, then it will likely go on your TN driving record. We have contacted the TN Department of Safety to find out if points will be assessed or not. The representative that got back to us stated that if you are convicted of an out of state ticket, such as speeding in FL, and their courts inform the TN DPS that the offense will go on your driving record and points will be assessed.

Since points to your Tennessee driving record are assigned for out of state tickets, it will be based on the amount of mph over the posted speed limit you were doing in Florida as to how many points you will receive. In Tennessee the points for speeding violations are as follows:

  • 1 to 5 mph in excess of speed zone- 1
  • 6 to 15 mph in excess of speed zone - 3
  • 16 to 25 mph in excess of speed zone - 4
  • 26 to 35 mph in excess of speed zone - 5
  • 36 to 45 mph in excess of speed zone - 6
  • 46 mph and above in excess of speed zone - 8

Since your speeding ticket conviction will go on your Tennessee driving record your insurance company could see it the next time they pull your motor vehicle record (MVR) and thus your rates could be affected. How much your car insurance premiums could rise would be up to the rating system of your auto insurer. If your rates do go up, get a quote for low cost car insurance for Tennessee by following this link.
