I was in an accident and found at fault, my car was totaled but my car was insured at the time. I am wondering why would the other drivers insurance company needs to talk to me? Shouldn't they just need to talk to insurance company my car was insured under?

The other insurance company may need to speak with you for a number of reasons. Likely if the other person's insurance company is trying to contact you it would be for your statement concerning the accident. If the person put in a claim against their own collision insurance, instead of through your property damage liability coverage, then their insurance company would be investigating the accident.

Part of the investigation is determining fault and liability. So their claims department and/or insurance adjuster may want to speak with you and get your description of the accident so they can determine fault. In some states fault can be divided among parties that were in the accident so they may be seeing if there is any blame to be put on their driver before paying out the claim.

The insurance company may need information on your insurance carrier so that they can speak to them as you noted. Perhaps their policyholder did not give them enough information to contact your insurance provider so they are contacting you. The best way to find out why the other party's insurer needs to speak to you is to ask them.

If the other party did make a first party claim against their own insurance policy, instead of a third party claim against your liability coverages, then likely their insurance company will subrogate with your or your insurance provider for the monies they pay out if they find you at fault for the accident, which it sounds as if they will from your question.

You can ask your company's claims adjuster that is working your claim why the other party's insurer needs to speak to you. Your adjuster would have more insight into this since they are familiar with your claim and if the other party made a claim against your liability policy or not.
