Insurance companies' guidelines vary with regards to those that need to be added as drivers or occasional drivers so to find out what your insurance carrier requires in your specific situation ask your agent.
An occasional driver is the person who is not the primary or principal driver of the vehicle and the definition for principal driver is the person who drives the car most often. These are the general definitions used in the insurance industry.
In general insurance companies allow coverage under your personal auto insurance policy for an occasional driver provided that driver does not live in your household and the vehicle is parked at your dwelling at the end of the day.
If your daughter has moved out and lives on her on, thus is no longer considered in any way to be a household member, then typically you will not have to add her to the policy as a driver if she visits a few times a year and drives your vehicle. If however ever comes back to live with you she would need to be added to the policy as a driver normally because then she would be a licensed household member.
If your daughter is away at college and still uses your home as her address for her license and residency then insurance companies’ guidelines again vary but you may then need to add her to the policy as a driver since she technically would still be a household member. Check with your insurance agent to see what they require you to do.
