In the state of Rhode Island, how long are your required to hold an SR-22 ?

In the state of Rhode Island the SR22 filing requirement period varies because it is set by the court when you are convicted of certain offenses.

The typical amount of time one will be required to carry a SR-22 filing is three years however in RI since the court sets the time period it may be the standard 3 years or a different period of time. To find out what length of time the court determined for you in your specific situation you should be able to contact the RI Department of Motor Vehicles or read through your court papers to see if they say how long a financial responsibility certificate must be filed.

If you find that the time period to maintain your SR-22 is up and the state of Rhode Island is no longer requiring you to carry it then the DMV or Rhode Island insurance regulator should be able to advise you what steps to take so that you can cancel the SR22 certificate / form from your insurance policy. Usually an insurance company will want proof that the SR22 can be cancelled and will no longer need to be filed on your behalf to the state.
