We contacted the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) to find out if your driving record from your previous state will transfer to Georgia and be placed on your new GA driving record. The representative of the GA DDS stated that all the states are now connected so if the DUI from your last state has your driver's license in a state of suspension that they will see this when you apply for a Georgia license.
Georgia, as do all states, checks the National Drivers Registry (NDR) when a person applies for a driver's license. If you are listed here as having a suspended, revoked or cancelled license than typically you cannot obtain a license until this issue is taken care of. So if your current state's license is suspended due to the DUI you would need to take care of this and get your license reinstated before applying and receiving a GA driver's license.
So if you have a suspension on your driving record in another state, it will show up when you try to obtain a GA license. If your license is clear and valid than you should be able to obtain a Georgia license. The DDS representative said that when you do obtain a Georgia driver's license any offenses on your previous motor vehicle record (MVR) will not be transferred to your new GA MVR.
While a previous DUI or other traffic violations will not show up on your new Georgia driving record keep in mind that your insurance company and employers (if you will drive or use a company car for your job) can still obtain a copy of your driving record from your previous state. So your new Georgia insurance company will check your MVR in your previous state to help them rate you since you have just moved and thus do not really have much of a driving record in GA to rate on yet.
