Yes, you receive points on your West Virginia driving record for both offenses of failing to signal and following too closely.
According to the WV Division of Motor Vehicles following too closely is 2 points on your motor vehicle record (MVR) and improper signal/failure to signal is also a 2 point moving violation. If you were ticketed for both traffic offenses than it would appear you would have a total of 4 points going on your West Virginia driving record.
The WV DMV notes that points are assessed for traffic violations according to the severity of the offense. Motorists who accumulate 6 to 8 points against their license receive a warning letter urging them to exercise more caution and obey all traffic laws. Continued unlawful driving can lead to license suspension.
Points for a given infraction remain on a driver’s record for two years after the date of the driver’s conviction for that infraction; the infraction itself remains on a driver’s record for seven years. License suspensions run consecutively; points accumulated by drivers already under suspension will result in an additional license suspension, to begin after the original suspension period ends.
Points are assessed for all traffic violations committed anywhere in the US. Drivers convicted of multiple offenses arising out of the same incident will be assessed only the points appropriate to the most serious offense. So if you received both tickets at the same time you may want to check with the West Virginia DMV to see if you are getting 4 points or just 2 points since you were given the 2 citations from one incident.
