I moved from Ohio to Arkansas. My license was suspended in Ohio before I moved down here. Can I get a license in Arkansas?

No we do not believe that Arkansas will allow you to obtain a driver's license here in your new state of residence while your license is still under suspension in your previous state of Ohio.

All states check with the National Driver Register (NDR) before issuing driver's licenses. The NDR lists problem drivers, meaning those with a suspended, revoked or canceled license as well as those that have serious offenses on their driving record such as a DUI. So your suspended license in Oklahoma should appear in the NDR and alert the AR DMV that you are ineligible to obtain a license in Arkansas.

The Arkansas Office of Driver Services states that the requirements for obtaining an Arkansas drivers license or Identification Card will depend on the license you are bringing with you from the other state. At any local revenue office an out-of-state license (not expired over 31 days, suspended, or revoked) may be surrendered in exchange for an Arkansas driver’s license.

If the out-of-state license is expired over 31 days but less than one year, you will be required to take the written and vision examination, but will not be required to take the road examination. If the out-of-state license is expired over one year, you will be required to take the written, vision, and road examination.

You can contact the AR DMV to see what steps you would need to take in order for this state to grant you a driver's license. It likely will be that you need to take care of the issues you have in OH and get that license reinstated so that you can obtain a Arkansas license by surrendering your clear Ohio driver's license or showing a document of clearance from Ohio.
