I have a Lexington, Kentucky driver's license with a clean record and received a reckless driving ticket in (Rockbridge county) Lexington, Virginia on October 16, 2008 on I-81 to I-64. Will my insurance see this? Will Kentucky suspend/add 6 points or see this?

Kentucky and Virginia are both part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) which requires member states to report convictions for moving violations back to the state in which a person was issued their license. Thus the VA courts should inform the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet of the reckless driving citation you received out of state.

The Kentucky driver's manual states that the KY Division of Driver Licensing keeps a record of all moving traffic violations on each driver licensed in Kentucky. These records are based on reports of traffic convictions, forfeiture of bail, or payment of fine, with or without court appearances, which are forwarded to the Division of Driver Licensing by the courts throughout the United States.

So it does appear that the Virginia reckless driving violation would go on your Kentucky motor vehicle record (MVR) if you are convicted of the offense. You could check with the KY Transportation Cabinet to see how else this out of state reckless driving citation could affect you but to the best of our knowledge it should not mean that your license would be suspended since you previously had a clean driving record and in KY it isn't until the accumulation of twelve (12) or more points against a driver age eighteen (18) or older, or 7 points against a driver under age 18, that the Transportation Cabinet conducts a hearing concerning the drivers privileges to operate a motor vehicle

We have previous read that Kentucky does not assess points for out of state speeding tickets but does for other types of moving violations. You should check with the KY Transportation Cabinet to find out then if your VA reckless driving conviction would be assessed points or not. If it is than according to the Kentucky driver point system list that we viewed it would be 4 points on your driving record for reckless driving.

Virginia finds many offenses to fall under the category of reckless driving there so if VA keeps a record on you, which they likely will, than you will be assigned there either 4 or 6 points according to the VA demerit points list.

Since the Virginia reckless driving ticket should appear on your KY driving record if you are convicted of the offense then your insurance company could see it the next time they pulled your MVR. It will depend upon your insurance carrier's rating system if this VA traffic ticket will affect your rates. Find out about the rating system of your insurance carrier from your insurance agent.
