I have received two tickets in under twelve months, accumulating to 7 points on my license and I am 17 years old. I live in Florida so does that mean my license will be suspended? If so, what happens when I turn 18?

According to the Florida Driver's Handbook there is a mandatory restriction for minors that accumulate too many points. The handbook states that any driver under the age of 18 who accumulates six or more points within a 12 month period is automatically restricted for one year to driving for "Business Purposes ONLY". If additional points are accumulated the restriction is extended for 90 days for every additional point received.

We read on the FL Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) site that the driving limited to “business purposes only” is for 12 months (plus 90 days for additional points over 6) or until driver turns 18 years old, whichever happens first. So it would appear that if your license will be restricted for a year or until you turn 18. If you turn 18 during this mandatory restriction (suspension) period than it appears you can get the driving for "business purposes" condition taken off of your driver' license.

With 7 points accumulated on your Florida operator's license it would appear that your driving privileges are suspended accept for driving to work. Your whole mandatory restriction time period would appear to be 12 months plus 90 days for a total of 15 months. However since you are 17 and would turn 18 during this time frame you will likely get this restriction then taken off.

FL Statute 322.271 Subsection C(1) states that “A driving privilege restricted to business purposes only" means a driving privilege that is limited to any driving necessary to maintain livelihood, including driving to and from work, necessary on-the-job driving, driving for educational purposes, and driving for church and for medical purposes.

To find out for certain what actions against your license the state will take due to your points total of 7, contact the FL HSMV directly. You can also find out what they define as "business purposes only" as a restriction for a minor. You can ask if it means can you only driving to work and back or perhaps school as well.
