Can my insurance go up if I got a ticket for driving on the shoulder?

Yes, it is possible that your car insurance rates will go up for a ticket you received for driving on the shoulder if you are convicted of this offense.

Some car insurance companies that will not raise your rates if you already have a policy in effect, for certain traffic offenses however all auto insurance companies take into account a person's driving record as a rating factor so will at least look at the driving on the shoulder violation to see what their rating systems says about that type of infraction.

A drivers' history and motor vehicle record (MVR) is used to determine what type of risk as a driver they are and thus the risk that they are putting the insurance company under to insure them and the vehicle they operate. Moving violations (tickets that a person was convicted of) on a driver's MVR shows that the person may drive recklessly or be a poor driver in general that would thus make them more likely to be in an accident.

A change in your driving record from a traffic ticket will almost always be taken into consideration by any car insurance carrier. Your driving history and amount of violations you have been convicted of will affect your rates.

A clean record will allow you normally to receive a safe driver discount and receive lower rates. Having an accident or moving violations on your record (speeding tickets, DWI, reckless driving, driving on the shoulder, etc.) put you at a higher risk for accidents and will likely mean a higher premium.

There are some insurance providers that will not raise your rates if it is your first minor ticket however your safe driver discount will likely be taken off which will cause your car insurance premiums to go up. All insurance premiums are filed and approved by a state agency so to find out about your company's rating system you can ask your agent or contact your state's insurance regulator.

Ultimately it is up to your insurance company's rating system to determines if a conviction for driving on the shoulder will affect your rates or not. If your rates do go up, get affordable quotes from an auto insurance specialist click here with us.
