Progressive offers a variety of flexible and affordable coverages for seasonal businesses, including landscaping insurance, snow plowing insurance and ice cream truck insurance. Progressive views a seasonal business as any business that operates only during specific times of the year, such as during specific months or for an entire season. Seasonal businesses can be trucking or small businesses. Examples of common types of commercial work truck insurance include:
- Ice cream truck insurance
- Snow plow insurance
- Landscaping insurance
- Fishing charter insurance
- Tax consultant
If you plan to drive your work truck or other vehicles for personal use during the off-season, you can save money by Progressive know. They will adjust your policy to reflect personal use for your vehicles. Since you often log less miles when driving your vehicles just for personal use, this simple change could lower your payments.
If your vehicle will be parked during the off-season, you may think you should cancel your insurance during this time but as you noted most states require insurance on the vehicle to keep the registration valid. So if you would like to protect your vehicle while still saving money some states do allow you to switch a commercial work truck insurance or personal policy to a Comprehensive Insurance Only policy.
You can speak to your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to see if there is any special registration (such as season registration) that they will allow you to use on a vehicle such as a snow plow. For example Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation (PennDOT) allows for seasonal registration due to legislation that was passed to provide flexibility to PA vehicle owner. This type of registration enables PA residents to drop vehicle insurance for part of each year without having to return the registration plate to the Department.
Seasonal Registration in PA permits the vehicle owner or lessee of a passenger vehicle, motorcycle, motor home, truck or farm vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of not more than 10,000 pounds, to register for less than a full year. The owner however must reinstate the vehicle insurance prior to submitting a renewal for registration to PennDOT.
Not all states allow you to drop insurance coverage all together though some will allow stored vehicle to get a Comprehensive Only policy. With Progressive's Comp Only policy you essentially decline all insurance coverages except for Comprehensive insurance. Though a Comprehensive Only policy doesn't fully protect your vehicle you pay a small monthly cost to have basic protection against damage caused by incidents like vandalism, falling tree branches and hail. You won't be legal to drive (since state liability is not part of the coverage), but this coverage will give your vehicle some basic protection.
A Comprehensive Only policy though gives you the bonus of continuous insurance coverage. And maintaining continuous insurance coverage is an easy way to lower your insurance premium. In fact, maintaining continuous insurance can save you enough money that you may find paying the small cost for a Comprehensive Only policy during the off-season actually saves you money in the long run.
If you must keep Liability coverages on your seasonal vehicle in your state due to registration laws than if the vehicle is going to be stored and not used still discuss it with the insurance provider you choose, such as Safeco or Progressive, to find out what discounts they can offer you for vehicle that is only used for a portion of the year and sits idle for the remaining months.
