The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) notes that an SR-22 insurance policy is a certificate of insurance that shows the department proof of insurance for the future, as required by law. SR-22 is form attached a motor vehicle Liability insurance which requires the insurance company to certify coverage to the Division of Motor Vehicles, and the insurance company must notify DMV any time the policy is canceled, terminated or lapses. You do not need to own a car to buy this kind of insurance. In AK an SR-22 insurance policy is normally required for reinstatement after a driver's privileges to drive have been suspended or revoked. If you are required to show proof of SR-22 insurance filing before having your driver's license reinstated, you must obtain a copy of the SR-22 insurance binder or application for the binder. For most offenses, you must carry this kind of insurance policy for three years from the ending day of any revocation. However for more serious offense you must carry the SR-22 for a longer period of time. For DWIs and Refusal convictions the SR-22 is required for five (5) years from the ending date on a first offense, ten (10) years from the ending date on a second offense, and twenty (20) years from the ending date on a third offense. SR22 must be carried for the life of the driver under the following circumstances in Alaska: - Fourth offense for DWI or Refusal convictions (AS 28.20.230)
- Unsatisfied Judgment (AS 28.20.330)
Even if you move out of state you must continue to carry file the SR-22 with Alaska until your time period is over. So if this was your first DUI/DWI offense than it would be for 5 years that you must hold the SR-22. Since you have moved you will need to find an insurance provider in MI that will file your AK SR-22 for you. As you know Alaska has minimum Liability limits of 50/100/25, and you moved to Michigan where the insurance requirements are very different due to their no-fault insurance laws. You should check with the Alaska DMV to find out what Michigan coverages they will accept and if you are having any difficulties getting an MI insurer to file a AK SR-22 ask the AK DMV how to go about getting this filing of financial responsibility done so you can continue your SR-22 filing with Alaska until your 5 year filing period ends.
