Can I really name my price for car insurance rates like Progressive says I can?

Yes, Progressive Direct has started a program where they try to allow you to name what you would like to pay for your insurance premiums.

Progressive has named this new program and quoting tool Name Your PriceĀ® and it is currently available in select states. It is not available through CarInsurance.com's Progressive offering.

With this type of auto insurance quote with Progressive you tell them what you want to pay, and they try to build a policy to fit your budget. They have you begin your quote and after you have input some information about you and your vehicle you have a chance to name the price you wish to pay for auto insurance.

Next they will generate a list of options available based on the desired amount you want to pay. Most of the time, you will have several options to choose from. If your price point does not generate any options then they will try to find the range of options that most closely fit your budget.

So you are shown the closest available package of coverages, limits, and deductibles they offer based on the price you have entered and you can determine if those fit your needs or if you need more or less coverages.

If you are wondering what type of coverages you need in your situation you can use our insurance coverage calculator to get car insurance guidance on limits, deductibles and what kind of coverage you need. Some agents have complained that customers may not get the coverage they need if they are just searching for a price.

When naming your own price with Progressive, the quote comes with a graphic of a slider bar which you can drag to the right or left to see how your coverages and price can change within a range of options. If you drag to the right, your rate will increase as your coverages change (for example higher limits, lower deductibles, etc). If you drag to the left, your rate will decrease as your coverages change (resulting in lower limits, higher deductibles, etc).

The premiums for the coverage is the same premium you would pay if you selected those coverage limits and deductibles, since they have to use the rates that are filed with the state.

Progressive currently allows customers to name their own price for car insurance rates in 16 states. These states are: California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. Progressive has said that a countrywide roll out of the new functionality will continue throughout 2009.

During your quote, we will tell you if Name Your PriceĀ® is available where you live.
