My husband needs a SR-22 form to be able to renew his license and I was just wondering if we would be able to possibly print one online or do we have to go to an insurance agency office in order to get the form?

Sometimes with Progressive you can can print out a SR-22 form online (if allowable) after you complete the E-sign process. You need to have insurance with an insurer provider to get them to fill out the form for you and in many states they then electronically file it with the state on behalf of your husband that needs this certificate of financial responsibility in place. With some of CarInsurance.com's carriers, we send you to a local insurance agency (over 420 available in 13 states) to pickup your form.

To have the SR-22 form filed for you by an insurance company you would need to purchase the insurance coverages you are required to by the state from an insurance carrier that files SR22s with the proper state department for its policyholders.

So you do not get the form yourself until you have bought the coverages you are mandated to by the state. The SR-22 form is something that the insurance company has and will file once you have purchased the insurance required of you by the state. Policyholders can be given the form to take to the license office. In some situations with some carriers the form can be downloaded online once they have filled it out for you. Some carriers offer instant SR-22s, while other require it to be filed before mailing a copy to you.

If your husband is required to file a SR-22, then you or he should contact your liability insurance agent and advise them of the needed filing with your state. The form must be filed by an insurance company licensed through your state's insurance regulatory body.

Not all insurance companies file the SR22, certificate of financial responsibility, so you will need to make sure the insurance provider you get your auto insurance policy through does offer the filing of the SR22.

If your insurance provider does not offer SR-22s and you are unable to find a company that can file the SR-22 for you then check with your state's insurance regulator who should be able to advise you where to find an insurance provider in your area that you can purchase the required insurance from and file the SR-22 form on your husband's behalf.

Typically for a SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility an agent can provide you the actual form, or it will be mailed to you with your policy documents. Each state has different form requirements, but typically it is a pink form that has your name, policy number, etc. It is used in the drivers license office to show proof of your compliance. The carrier will also electronically or manually (depending on the state) file with the Motor Vehicle Department an acknowledgement that you have the SR-22.

If you are shopping for car insurance and need to file an SR-22 with the state be sure to tell any insurance company you get quotes with so you can verify they do offer this SR22 service. We currently offer an SR-22 in most states through Progressive or Direct General.
