The coverages that your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) offers differs by state however in general they usually do include some payment for lost wages due to injuries you sustained in a car accident and that are keeping you from being able to work.
PIP is also known as no-fault insurance in many states and comes with different coverages and limits. Personal Injury Protection is designed to cover you, up to your PIP limits, if you have been injured in an auto accident, regardless of fault.
For example in Florida you are required to have $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and part of benefits that come with PIP coverage is a percent of your lost wages (income). A typical FL PIP policy pays 80% of medically necessary expenses, 60% of lost wages and 100% of replacement services such as child care and $5000 for death benefits.
As noted by the Michigan insurance regulator, the MI DLEG, the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) part of a MI no-fault auto insurance coverage covers you if you are hurt in an auto accident. This part of your no-fault policy will pay all of your medical costs. It will also pay up to 85% of the income you would have earned if you had not been hurt, for up to three years. However, the amount that you would be paid for lost income is limited and the limit is revised annually. Effective 10/1/08, the maximum is $4,948 per month.
Massachusetts state law requires a minimum Personal Injury Protection coverage of $8,000. This coverage pays for replacement services and 75% of any lost wages due to an accident where injuries keep you from working.
You can contact your state insurance regulator to find out more about your state laws regarding PIP coverages if necessary.
If you were injured in an auto accident and have PIP coverage you first though should speak to your insurance provider about how to make your PIP claim against your policy. There are time limits to follow regarding PIP claims normally. By reading through your auto insurance policy, specifically your PIP section, and speaking to your insurance agent you should be able to find out what percentage of lost income (wages) your insurance will pay.
