We contacted the Georgia Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) to see if there are any age restrictions or a GA law stating a minimum age to buy, register and title a car in your name. The GA MVD responded that any person can tag and title a vehicle as long as they have valid Georgia driver’s license or ID card and Georgia insurance.
So it appears that a 17 year old could have a vehicle titled in their name in Georgia as long as he or she had a valid driver's license of identification card and was able to obtain Georgia insurance for that vehicle.
Insurance companies typically will not allow a minor, someone under the age of 18, to be on a policy all by themselves but will require a parent or guardian to sign on the car insurance policy since it is a legal contract. So while a teen or minor in Georgia may be able to title and register a car solely in their name at age 17 they would normally still need a parent or guardian involved with their auto insurance policy.
