If you have liability insurance and your car was parked and someone broke the window, is it covered?

No, your car insurance would not cover if your window was broken out in your car and all you carry on your vehicle is Liability coverages. Though most states laws only require you to carry Liability coverages so that you fulfill the mandatory financial responsibility laws this type of coverage does not cover your vehicle in any way if it is damaged.

With just Liability coverages on your vehicle, meaning Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability, your vehicle is not protected or covered at all. These Liability coverages are for others that you may cause damage or harm to.

Your Bodily Injury Liability coverage covers other people's bodily injuries or death for which you are responsible. Claims for bodily injury may be for such things as medical bills, loss of income or pain and suffering. Bodily injury liability covers injury to people, not your vehicle.

Property Damage Liability covers you if your car damages someone else's property. Usually it is their car, but it could be a fence, a house or any other property damaged in an accident. It also provides you with legal defense if another party files a lawsuit against you. It does not cover damage to your own car.

Glass damage is covered under the Comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy which if you only have Liability and not physical damage coverages of Comprehensive and Collision than your own vehicle would not be covered for someone breaking the window of your car. Broken windshields, side windows, back glass, and any other glass repairs or replacements are covered under Comprehensive coverage and not Liability coverage.

Without having Comprehensive coverages on your vehicle than you are unable to make a claim with your car insurance company for the broken window your car sustained on this break in or vandalism to your vehicle. You thus are left paying out of pocket to repair your window or if the police are able to catch the person that broke the window you can go against them for the cost of the window repair and any other damage they caused to your car.

Get instant car insurance quotes here for either just Liability or for full coverage which would include Collision and Comprehensive so that your vehicle would be covered in the future for damages it sustains.
