According to the Colorado Driver Control Services representative we contacted, a regular CO driving record printout will show all tickets and other entries, retained by the Division of Motor Vehicles, until the entry becomes seven years old. At the 7 year mark the violation will drop from the printout (your driving record that you can request); however, the information is retained on file with the DMV.
The Division of Motor Vehicle has no control on how an insurance company views your record though they can see violations looking back 7 years. Thus it is up to your insurer and their rating system whether they will rate you on violations for 3, 5 or even 7 years.
In Colorado each type of a conviction also causes a certain number of points to be placed on your driving record. If you get too many points within a certain period of time, you will lose your driver’s license through a point suspension. Each time you get a ticket the Division of Motor Vehicles places the points on your record and determines if there are enough points to cause a suspension of your driving privileges.
The following are point accumulations that result in suspension:
- For minor drivers 16-17 years of age, the 6th point within 12 months, or, 7 or more until they turn 18.
- For minor drivers 18-20 years of age, the 9th point within 12 months, the 12th point within 24 months, or, 14 or more between their 18th birthday , and until the age of 21.
- For adult drivers 21 and over, the 12th point within 12 months, or, 18 or more within 24 months.
Colorado is required by law to notify you when any type of action is taken against your driver's license. In the event of a driver's license suspension because of an accumulation of points, a notice is sent to the last address that the DMV has on file. First a notice of a hearing is sent; if you do not appear for that hearing, a second notice is sent telling you about the suspension and listing the reinstatement requirements.
