In order to obtain car insurance do you need a car?

No, you do not need a car to get carinsurance. You can get car insurance without owning a car if you are eligible for a non-owners policy.

If you do not own a car nor is there a vehicle owned by anyone in your household that you could use to obtain insurance on normally you can obtain a non-owners policy. You will just need to meet the underwriting criteria of the non-owner's insurance provider.

Since insurance companies’ guidelines and underwriting criteria can differ, but typically the criteria would at least include not owning a vehicle and having a valid driver's license.

Non-owners insurance is coverage which gives a motorist Liability protection when they are at-fault in an accident but do not own a vehicle. Non-owners policies typically include Bodily Injury (BI) and Property Damage (PD) Liability an can sometimes also include Medical Payments (MedPay), and Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverages.

Non owner policies generally do not include Comprehensive, Collision, towing reimbursement, or rental reimbursement coverage since a person obtaining a non-owners policy does not have a specific car they are putting coverage on.

A non-owners policy for any car you would borrow and drive would normally be secondary to the insurance put on the vehicle by the car owner. That is one reason why if you could be placed on a household auto insurance policy, or the policy of someone else if you frequently drive their vehicle, than you should do so instead of obtaining a non-owner's policy.

The price of a non-owners policy will vary but for this type of policy for a driver over the age 25 with no violations it typically costs around $200 to $700 a year, depending on the state and insurer. A non-owners policy basically is the cost of BI and PD Liability and any of the Uninsured Motorist requirements for the driver in their particular state.

At CarInsurance.com we are able to offer non-owners insurance in most states online. If we offer this type of policy in your state then on the vehicle screen it will have the option of choosing "Check this box if you do not own a vehicle and would like to purchase a non-owners policy."
