Montana and Oregon are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) so if you are convicted of the tickets for driving with a suspended license in OR than their courts will inform the MT Motor Vehicle Division.
According to the Montana MVD a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) for a driver who is licensed in Montana is comprised of information provided by a variety of sources. In Montana, District Courts or Courts of Limited Jurisdiction may provide conviction information. Information may come from tribal courts, courts in other states, other state Departments of Motor Vehicles, even from agencies in other countries.
The MT MVD told us that when out of state convictions are reported to them they do indeed add them to your Montana driving record and if it is a points offense also add points to your MVR.
In Montana your driving record is a lifetime record. Traffic convictions stay on your driving record for life. Montana law restricts how some aspects of a driving record may be utilized or applied. For example, in accordance with Montana Code Annotated 33-18-210 (9), conviction information older than three years that is derived solely from a driving record may not be used to affect your insurance rates or insurance eligibility.
Montana does not take part in the Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC) which requires states to suspend the license of their drivers if they do not comply with out of state tickets however their own laws may allow them to suspend your license.
For instance we found MT Code - 61-5-204 is title suspending resident's license upon conviction in another state. Here it says that the department (MVD) may suspend or revoke the driver's license of any resident of this state or the privilege of a nonresident to drive a motor vehicle in this state upon receiving notice of the conviction of the person in another jurisdiction of an offense in that jurisdiction which, if committed in this state, would be grounds for the suspension or revocation of the driver's license.
So if failing to comply with a ticket is an offense for which Montana could suspend your license if you ignore the Oregon tickets or being convicted of driving while suspended in another state, if you do take care of the tickets and are convicted, is than your MT license could also be suspended.
We did contact the Montana Motor Vehicle Division to seek clarification and their representative said that if you failed to take care of your Oregon tickets than likely that state will suspend your license, if it is not already, and put out a warrant for your arrest. This is what would happen in Montana if you ignored your traffic tickets. She also said that if you were pulled over in Montana the authorities here could see that you have problems in Oregon and could take action against you.
It is not a good idea to ignore tickets whether they are from in state or from out of state since if you do and either your home state or another state suspends your license than it should be entered into the National Driver Register (NDR) so that when you try to renew your license or if you move to another state and try to apply for a driver's license any DMV will see the suspension and deny your renewal or new license. Also a state will normally continue to send you notices and even may send you to collections regarding any fines that are due for a ticket that was not complied with.
