Do women get cheaper car insurance than men? Why or why not?

Rating systems and rate factors vary from insurance company to insurance company but in many cases there are some differences between the rates for male drivers compare to female drivers. Auto insurance premiums are determined by using many factors, gender generally being one of them.

With all factors being equal, a female between the ages of 18 and 25 will generally pay less than her male counterpart. This is because generally speaking younger women have fewer accidents and moving violations than males in the same age group. Statistics show that males typically are more aggressive drivers and thus with some insurance companies their risk factor is higher so a male driver's car insurance rates are higher than that of a female with these insurers.

It has nothing to do with gender, but rather the grouping of men and women. Insurance rates are set by groups or rating factors.

Another reason that men may pay higher rates than women drivers is that because males on average drive more than females. And if you drive more then your odds of being in an accident increase. Also, young men are more often risk takers behind the wheel. This often results in moving violation tickets. Both of those factors result in higher premiums.

So your gender can affect your car insurance rates. Because statistically female drivers have fewer incidents than males their rates are in general lower. Of course if a female has a bad driving record and her male counterpart has a good, clean record then the female's rates would normally be higher due to her record.

The good news for males is that many insurance companies recognize that because men drive more when they are young when they are a bit older and their driving experience grows, they can look forward to paying less than women. This is especially true if the male has a good driving record and no claims against your car insurance policy.

Risk factors help insurance companies determine the premium rates as accurately as possible. There are many risk factors including gender. Here is a list of some other primary factors that most insurance companies use (if your state laws allow):

  • Age
  • Marital Status
  • Geography
  • Driving Record
  • Claims History
  • Vehicle Type
  • Occupation
  • Education
  • Miles driven each year
  • Years of driving experience
  • Type of vehicle use (business, personal, commuting, etc.)
  • Current insurance and current insurance limits
