The new registration and driver's license fees went into effect September 1, 2009 in Florida. If you were able to renew before Sept 1 you saved money but for those that waited to renew or were unable to renew just yet, they will end up paying more.
Since the first day of September rolled around, vehicle registration fees increased 35 percent to 60 percent, depending on the type of registration one is paying for. For those that were quick on toes and had a birthday around this time they could save. For instance if renewing your tags on medium-sized car weighing about 3,500 pounds the amount of $46.10 was due before September 1st then after it jumped up 35 percent to $71.15. Your percentage of rate increase after Sept 1 could be even more depending upon your registration type.
In FL registration can be renewed up to three months before your birthday, when they expire. So those with birthdays up until November 30 were able to renew before the rate increase went into effect. You can renew your vehicle's registration for 2 years and for those that took advantage and renewed before September 1st rate hike saved around $50.
The Florida Legislature increased the cost of registrations and driver's licenses as part of its efforts to balance the state budget this year (2009).
As for September 1, 2009 driver's license fees went from $27 to $48 and the price of renewals went go from $20 to $48. Again those whose renewal date was coming up and were quick thinking could save money since in FL you can renew your driver's license up to 18 months before your birthday when it expires. So DMVs saw plenty of people coming in to renew their drivers’ licenses under the previous rate when their license was to expire within 18 months.
