What is the basic, required insurance required in Denver, CO in order to register and drive in Denver? What about Colorado state?

The amount of auto insurance required in Denver, CO is the same as what is required in the state of Colorado as a whole.

The Colorado Division of Insurance (DOI) states that if you own an automobile in Colorado you are required to purchase auto insurance. By law, you are required to carry Liability insurance to provide financial protection in the event you injure someone else or damage someone else’s property while operating your automobile.

Automobile Liability insurance is generally defined as coverage for bodily injury you cause to another person or for property damage you cause to another person’s property through negligent use of your vehicle. The minimum amount of Liability insurance required by Colorado law is as follows:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury;
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury; and
  • $15,000 per accident for property damage.

Additional coverage Uninsured Motorist coverage, Comprehensive and Collision are available, but not required. Since Jan. 1, 2009, Colorado also requires mandatory Medical Payment coverage (med-pay) with all insurance policies. Consumers may refuse this coverage in writing however.

While Comprehensive and Collision are not required by the state if your vehicle is financed than your lien holder will normally require you carry them on their asset, which is your vehicle. These coverages along with Liability coverages are what may term as “full coverage" car insurance.

So whether in Denver or Ft. Collins, Colorado the minimum liability requirements in Colorado are 25/50/15 which encompasses these limits of Bodily Injury Liability (25/50) and Property Damage Liability (15). It is against the law in Colorado to drive an uninsured vehicle. If you are caught driving without insurance there are severe penalties.

A first offense for driving without insurance comes with a $500 minimum fine and 4 points being placed onto your CO motor vehicle record (MVR). A second is a minimum $1000 fine and a license suspension of 4 months. A third violation comes with penalties which can include a minimum fine of $1000, community service, and an 8 month license suspension.
