The Georgia Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) states that non-motorized vehicles, i.e. trailers, campers, etc., and vehicles exempt from registration in this state, i.e. snowmobiles, bicycles, mopeds, all-terrain vehicles, golf carts, etc., do not require insurance coverage.
Motorcycles do require insurance coverage so you need to make sure your moped does not fall into Georgia's definition of a motorcycle or else it would need to be insured.
The MVD defines the a moped as a motor-driven cycle equipped with two or three wheels, foot pedals to permit manual propulsion and an independent power source providing maximum of two brake horsepower. Georgia does not issue a tag or title for a moped.
A motorcycle or motor scooter is defined as a motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for use a rider and designed to travel not more than three wheels in contact with the ground but excluding a tractor, moped and an all-terrain vehicle.
The GA MVD states that Motor vehicle owners and lessees in this state are required to maintain continuous mandatory liability insurance coverage on their vehicle(s) to:
- Legally drive the vehicle(s);
- Register and obtain Georgia license plates (tags); and,
- Renew, replace, or transfer their existing Georgia license plates (tags).
When insurance is required, the Georgia minimum liability limits for motor vehicle insurance is 25/50/25. These limit numbers stand for $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person for a total of $50,000 of bodily injury per occurrence and $25,000 of property damage liability per occurrence.
So if your moped is truly a moped it would not be licensed / titled and thus would not need insurance on it. If your moped actually falls into the motorcycle definition than insurance would be required on it. If you are unsure of what category your moped falls into contact the GA MVD for clarification.
