The state of Arizona requires that auto insurance companies offer Uninsured Motorist coverage to all policyholders but the insured can reject this coverage if they want since it is not mandatory to carry. Arizona state law requires that all motor vehicle Liability policies provide Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist protection unless it is deleted or reduced by agreement between the insured and the company.
The AZ Department of Insurance (DOI) notes that every insurer writing automobile liability or motor vehicle liability policies in Arizona must make available and offer, by written notice, Uninsured Motorist, and Underinsured Motorist coverage. A policyholder can reject this coverage though so UM coverage is required to be offered to every policyholder in AZ but not required to be carried by every policyholder.
It is your choice whether to buy Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist coverages in Arizona since it is an optional coverage. What is required in Arizona is Liability coverages with certain limits.
AZ requires that every motor vehicle operated on their roadways be covered by one of the statutory forms of financial responsibility, more commonly called liability insurance, through a company that is authorized to do business in Arizona. This includes golf carts, motorcycles and mopeds. Minimum levels of financial responsibility for motor vehicles in Arizona are 15/30/10 meaning:
- $15,000 Bodily Injury Liability for one person and $30,000 for two or more persons
- $10,000 Property Damage Liability
If you choose to have Uninsured motorist coverage than it pays for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering caused by an uninsured driver, a hit-and-run driver or a miss-and-run driver. Underinsured motorist increases your coverage for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering caused by a driver who does not have enough insurance to pay for these damages.
These coverages protect you, your family who lives with you, and your passengers. In most cases, your bodily injury coverage does not give you this protection. These coverages also protect you and your family who live with you when riding in someone else's vehicle, walking, riding a bicycle, or say just sitting on a porch and hit by an uninsured/underinsured vehicle.
Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist coverages are Bodily Injury coverages and thus do not pay for damage to your vehicle or other property. You may buy Collision coverage to pay for damage to your vehicle caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.
Some drivers have no insurance or do not have enough insurance. The best way to protect yourself from damages caused by drivers who do not have insurance or do not have enough insurance is to buy Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist coverages.
