For all drivers to be insured properly the auto insurance company would need to be aware that the policyholder's address is different than the garaged location of the vehicle. It is not enough that all the drivers are listed on the car insurance policy, the insurance provider must also be aware who is the primary driver as well as where they are driving and garaging the vehicle.
Typically the car needs to be garaged at the policyholder's address to be on their policy however there are situations where the insurance company will allow the car to be driven and garaged elsewhere, such as if your child is using your car away at college.
Most insurance carriers have specific guidelines with regards to when and where a vehicle is covered. In this instance, the car owner should refer to their policy or contact their insurance agent and/or company to see what is covered under their specific policy. Generally, insurance companies require that the vehicle be garaged at the address where it is insured unless stated otherwise in the insurance contract and that certain drivers are covered as insured’s.
Without informing the insurance company of where the car is being driven and garaged, since it would be different than the policyholder's address they may be able to deny claims, if they arise, by stating the car owner misrepresented who was driving the car and where it was located.
