We recently read the news story about the SUV in Oklahoma that collided with an elephant. We assume that is the situation you are referencing.
Apparently, the animal escaped from a nearby circus and collided with an SUV when it ran across a rural highway in Enid, OK. I am sure the driver and passengers felt like they were in the movie Jumanji. Luckily, no one was injured in that incident.
The circus or animal owner would be responsible for the animal's actions, but if you need to file it under your car insurance then Comprehensive coverage protects you against running into wild animals.
Other Than Collision (OTC) also known as Comprehensive coverage covers your vehicle, and other vehicles (in limited scenarios) you may be driving for losses resulting from incidents other than collision. For example, comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen; or damaged by flood, fire, or animals. Comprehensive coverage pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose.
The other type of Physical Damage coverage is Collision. Collision covers damage to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle, or other object. It pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose.
Both Physical Damage coverages are limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.
