You should inform your car insurance provider that you have moved to see what their specific guidelines are on continuing your coverage out of state as you make your home there and transfer your title, registration and insurance over to your new state. Insurance companies’ guidelines and policy terms vary so the time you have to change over your insurance coverage from your old state to your new state varies as well.
In general your insurance carrier should give you some time in which to make the changes but you will want to inform them of your change in location and get insured in your new state as quickly as possible so that you are following your new state's laws for registering and insuring your car there.
State laws differ on how long you can keep your out of state plates and registration on your vehicle however most states do have statutes in place that you must change over your driver's license, vehicle registration and plates, etc within a certain amount of time after moving to the state and becoming a resident. Typically the amount of time given is 30 days but again this varies by state.
If you have already moved then contact your current insurance company and let them know and see how long they will continue to cover you and your vehicle in your new state. You then can plan accordingly to get new coverage, and change over your registration and title as well as driver's license to your new state.
If your current auto insurance is with a national company you may have the option of staying with the same auto insurance and moving the coverage to an equivalent policy in your new state; however, some state insurance laws are so different than those of the rest of the country that some major insurance companies have stopped offering coverage in certain states.
Whether moving auto insurance is necessary because the your current company does not write policies in your new state or even if you could continue with your current insurer it is wise to get several quotes to know that you are getting the best rates possible. If you are also shopping for homeowner's or renter's insurance then if you get both coverages with the same insurance company you should get a multi-line discount.
