QuestionInsurance Question  What is a zip code?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

If you are in the United States, your zip code is the 5 digit number at the end of your address.

ZIP (Zoning Improvement Plan) Code, which began on July 1, 1963. Faced with growing mail volumes, the Post Office developed the five-digit Zoning Improvement Plan code, or ZIP Code, as a way to quickly sort mail and speed its delivery. The first digit in the ZIP Code indicates a general geographic area of the nation, starting with “0” in the eastern U.S. to “9” to represent areas in the western U.S. The next two numbers in the ZIP Code represent regional areas, and the final two numbers identify specific post offices or postal zones.

Insurance companies use it as a locator for garaging addresses of a policyholder's vehicle. This is the place you park your car at night. The ZIP Code is used in the USA for specific location information.

If you are unsure what your zip code is, look at a piece of mail or contact your local city hall or post office.

An example of a zip code is a 5 digit number. For example, the zip code in Beverly Hills, CA is 90210. In Agawam, Massachusetts the zip code is 01001.

We often get this question from our international visitors. A zip code is the equivalent to Foreign Postal Codes. Each city or area has multiple ZIP codes, so it is important to know what your specific zip code is.

On our site, if you are a US or Candadian user enter your zip/postal code into the quote box and select 'Start Quote.'

ZIP+4 includes the five digits of the ZIP code, a hyphen and then four more digits. The +4 extension adds a more precise location than by the ZIP code alone. You can visit the United State Postal Service online to find out the full +4 zip code, if you can provide the full address.
