QuestionInsurance Question  Im 16 years old and about to buy my first car. Can I take out my own insurance policy without my parents?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

No, it is unlikely that you will be able to get a policy without a parent or legal guardian on your policy or signing for your policy.

An insurance policy is a contract and most states require someone at the age of majority (not a minor) to sign the documents to make them binding. Also, most carriers set underwriting restrictions so that the named insured is not under the age of 18.

On a typical policy you should report all persons fourteen (14) years of age and older living in the insured’s household, whether or not they are licensed. These persons must be included in the rating or must be specifically excluded. The exception is typically a foster child in the household with a learner’s permit.

You can buy an insurance policy and be the only named insured; however, due to your age your parent or legal guardian would need to sign the documents.
