Your American insurance will not cover you in Mexico. Some American and Canadian insurance companies will offer limited coverage; however, this limited coverage does not always meet Mexican requirements and you can be detained in Mexico without insurance from a Mexican car insurance provider.

You must, at the minimum, carry liability insurance by a Mexican authorized provider.
