Car insurance is compulsory when driving anywhere on public roads in Canada. The liability insurance required by law protects you if you cause an accident injuring someone, or damaging someone else's property.
Motorists visiting Canada from the United States can be assured of coverage via their existing car insurance policies, if their company has agreed with Canadian authorities to provide such coverage. No amendment to your insurance coverage is necessary. Before leaving home, you should obtain a yellow Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card from your insurance company. This card indicates that your insurance company has agreed to provide coverage of not less than the minimum legal requirement in any jurisdiction in Canada in which you travel. Keep the card in your vehicle as proof of your insurance if requested by a police officer.
If you plan to rent a car while in Canada, you will normally receive the required insurance protection with the rental agreement. A valid driver's licence is, of course, essential.
