QuestionInsurance Question  I live in Massachusetts. I am 31 years old and I have been in the country for 3 years. I have a learner’s permit and want to get a car before getting a license. As I understand, to register a car to my name I have to get auto insurance. Can I get insurance with a learner’s permit and be the only one on the policy?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

No, not unless you are able to find a specialty (non-standard) carrier that allows for that exception.

Underwriting guidelines vary from insurance company to insurance company, but typically this would not be acceptable.

States require a licensed driver in the vehicle with the driver who has a learners permit, insurance companies usually require an additional licensed driver to be listed on the policy. Their may be a minimum age requirement for the additional driver, too.
