QuestionInsurance Question  My 16 year old daughter will be getting her license soon. She plans to purchase a car that will be driven by her only. Can the car be in her name or will it need to be in our names (parents) as she is still a minor? Also, can a 16 year old get insurance in her name only or will it need to be in the parents name as well? If she is able to get an insurance policy in her own name on her car, will we still have to list her on our insurance policy even if she does not drive our cars?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Contracts with minors ( those under 18) are voidable. With parental consent a car can be owned by a 16 year old. An insurance policy can also be taken out by the 16 year old with parental consent if the owner is the 16 year old. You should contact your specific company to see if you still need to list your daughter on your policy. If she will be driving your cars then you most likely will have to , if she won't be driving your vehicles then you may be able to exclude her.
