QuestionInsurance Question  My young cousin (23) is always asking to borrow my car. I am a 53 year old female. I purchased insurance stating I am the only one driving my car. What if she is in an accident while driving my car? I dont want to be selfish, but I also dont want to be stupid. I'd hate to have my insurance go up again or be liable for damages and injuries. I live in Oregon.

If your cousin drives your vehicle, you or your insurance company will ultimately be held responsible through what is referred to as vicarious liability. As the owner of the vehicle, you are responsible for those who drive your vehicle, for what your vehicle damages, and those who get hurt (in your vehicle or not). You purchase insurance to help cover this liability. If you cousin lives in your household and is going to drive your vehicle, you will need to list her on your policy as a driver. If your cousin does not reside in your household and is going to be driving your vehicle on a regular basis, she will need to be listed on your policy as a driver. If your cousin does not live with you and she will be nothing more than an occasional driver, she may not need to be listed as a driver on your policy. You should contact your insurance company or agent to go over the options which best suits your insurance needs.
