QuestionInsurance Question  I am a minor (17 years old) in California. I just got my instructional permit. I want to know if I need insurance to drive - even if I am driving with a licensed driver that is 25 years or older?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

California requires drivers and vehicle owners to carry bodily injury liability limits of $15,000/$30,000 and property damage liability of $5,000. If you are driving a vehicle, you will need to be covered for these coverages - regardless if you have a learner's license. If you are not listed on a specific policy to drive a specific policy, you may want to consider purchasing a 'named non owner' policy. This policy will provide coverage for liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverages for someone who does not own a vehicle and will be operating a vehicle owned by someone else. Since, you are a minor, to take out your own policy, you will need a parent or legal guardian to sign the application with you. Also, since you have a learner's permit, the insurance company will probably require you list someone on the policy as an additional driver who has a regular driver's license and is at least 21 years old.
