QuestionInsurance Question  I have a Kentucky driver's license, but I do not own a car. I have been driving my friend's car. She has car insurance, but I am not listed on the policy as a driver. Can I still drive her car? What will happen if there is an accident while I am driving her car?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

If you are driving your friend's vehicle with any kind of regularity, you should be listed on your friend's policy as a driver. Otherwise, your friend runs the risk of having the insurance company deny coverage for a claim if you involved in an accident with that vehicle. As a result you and your friend can be held accountable for that accident. If your friend does not add you to that policy as a driver, to protect your interests, you may consider purchasing a 'named non owner' insurance policy. This policy will provide coverage for liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverages for someone who does not own a vehicle and will be operating a vehicle owned by someone else.
