QuestionInsurance Question  A friend borrowed my truck and swerved to miss a deer and ran off the road. He has a non-owners insurance policy, because he does not own a vehicle. Which insurance is first liable for the claim - his non-owners policy or my full coverage insurance?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Whose policy covers what depends on what needs to be fixed. If you are talking about your vehicle (needing to be fixed), you will need to use the 'collision' coverage from your insurance policy. 'Collision' covers your vehicle if it impacts another object. It will protect your vehicle up to its actual cash value (which takes its depreciation into consideration). Your deductible will apply. Also, your friend's non-owner policy does not cover 'comprehensive' or 'collision' coverages. This policy will provide coverage for liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverages. However, if you are referring to the property damaged by your vehicle, your liability limits will be primary and the liability from the non-owner policy will be excess.
